An infinity dress, also called a convertible dress, is a dress made in a way that allows you to style it in many different styles. It doesn’t have a set structure – it’s usually composed of a full skirt and a top part that has two long strips of fabric. Those long strips are the secret to the many possible infinity dress styles.
But just because you can style a dress in many different ways doesn’t mean you should. You should pick the style that suits your body shape.
Four Classy Infinity Dress Styles
#1 – The Grecian Goddess
This is where you take both strips of top fabric to one side and leave one shoulder bare. Like with all the other ways to wear infinity dress, you have several variations within a category. You can make the fabric rectangular and wide, like an Indian Saree, or roll it into a thin rope-like shape. Add a gold leaf broch and put your hair in an updo and you’re as beautiful as Aphrodite.
#2 – The Halter Neck
The halter neck dress is a classic, but be aware that if you are an inverted triangle, it might overemphasize your broad shoulders. There are different ways to wear an infinity dress in the halter style. For example, you can take each strip and cross it over the shoulder on the other side and then tie at the back. Another would be to first tie it around your waste to your back and then to the front again. Then cross it over starting from a bit of a wider position. This could then allow you to create a bare area underneath the cross-over and above the belted part.
#3 – The Sweetheart
A sweetheart neckline is when the middle part dips lower than above the breasts, creating a heart shape across your chest. This can be done with shoulder straps or without straps at all. To create the strapless sweetheart look, you take the two strips of fabric and cross them over at the front, bringing them up above the breasts and then tying them at the back.
#4 – Old Hollywood Glam
The three above styles can be done in a way that gives you an old Hollywood glam look. You can achieve this by doing your hair and makeup in a certain way as well as by the choice of accessories. Depending on your taste, you can go full dramatic glam, like Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor, or veer more towards a more minimal elegant style, like Audrey Hepburn. There are YouTube tutorials for hair and makeup that can help with either.
Ways To Wear An Infinity Dress
Generally-speaking, these dresses are mostly used by bridesmaids. But you can still figure out how to wear an infinity dress in other contexts. If you avoid the typical bridesmaids’ fabrics and colors, like baby pinks and blues, and coordinate the rest of your look to have a more mature and elegant style personality, then you’ll be fine.
