Inner Beauty Series: Be Discreet

Simply put, discretion is keeping information confidential.  And a lady is always discrete. She does not tattle on others, and she knows when to keep her mouth shut.

Some of the following pointers may seem like common sense advice. However, a little reminder is always good.

Be discreet in the following circumstances:

1. Negative observations about other people

Some information may not be flattering. Someone has gained weight or if so-and-so’s father collapsed at a dinner party. Don’t go on blabbing about these issues.

2. Privacy, please!

Keep the bedroom matters in the bedroom.

3. Family matters

Don’t mention anything related to the great Aunt’s lost cousin who was in an asylum, or Uncle Dean’s illegitimate lovechild.

4. Business or Financial matters

If you were privy to any financial or business information, these are usually top secret matters. And not to be discussed with anyone.

5. Philanthropy or Being helpful

If you do something kind for someone, not everyone around you needs to know about it.  It is fine if only the person you’ve helped knows.  No one loves a person with an agenda for attention.

6. Announcement of an event

Whether a friend just found out she’s pregnant or if a couple is celebrating their 50th anniversary. Don’t make any official announcements unless you’ve been given permission.

7. Invitations to parties or galas

Not everyone is on good terms with everyone. Thus, not everyone is attending, and not everyone may be invited.  Do not create an awkward situation for the host.

8. Keep it a secret

If a person asks you to keep something a secret, please avoid repeating it to someone else. Even if that someone else may not know about whom you speak.  Practice discipline as well as discretion.

Think to yourself:

Does this make me or the other person look bad

If the answer is ‘yes,’ then it’s a good idea to stay quiet about it.

Similarly, the other questions you should ask yourself:

Does this information need to be protected? or

Are there negative consequences if information is revealed?

If the answer to all these questions is ‘yes,’  then it’s best to say nothing.  If you’re not very sure, staying quiet is still your best option.

No one loves a woman who can’t shut up, reveals confidential information, or embarrasses others.  A valued lady is one who is trustworthy and can keep a secret.

  1. Not sure about the gentle ladies that post, but in each article I locate inspiration with such lovely pictures. Thank you, Hanifa for spending time with us.

  2. These are all common sense and basic educational rules we should get from our mothers/fathers. But 80% of the population has no clue and/or does not want to follow them. That’s why the ones that do, create a distinct vibe. Education and manners will never be unevaluated in society. No matter your level of income.
