Jet set Babe Make Up School

I’m back with Part 3 of my “From Plain Jane to JetsetBabe” posts where I write about how to look more like the jet set girls. Since I enjoy looking in to details, this is my analysis of what I’ve seen & the experience I’ve gained throughout the years.

Today I wish to talk about an important topic: Make up.

What type of make does the typical Jet set Babe wear? What is their secret to look elegant? And of course, examples of typical Jet set Babe make up styles. Here we go..

Natural make up is the answerbottomline

Sorry to disappoint all the make up lovers out there, but if you want to look like a proper Jet set Babe – less is more.

Clear skin, defined eyebrows, long eyelashes and a slight touch of colour on your cheeks is enough. They don’t do that much more unless it’s evening make up.

I cannot remember all the amount of times I have heard men praise women who do not put on too much make up – I actually understand why!

After seeing Jet set Babes out there in all kinds of variations I can simply say that make up can be a big deal breaker, you have to make it look classy and you have to be wise with the amounts you put on your face.

Never wear bad make upbottomline

We can all agree that bad make up will make any girl look trashy!

But not everyone is fortunate with learning the trick of the trade and doing make up like a pro. For this reason it is important that you perfect your applying skills by practising often at home and also watch youtube tutorials – there are plenty of them!

We want to achieve a steady hand, an eye for what works for your face and simply get familiar with all those good and bad angels that you wish to hide or enhance. Get familiar with your face, as it is your canvas. That is my main advice.

The good thing with jet set make up is that you do not need to learn any complicated things. Everything is on a very basic level – but you need to learn how to master those basics like a pro. Make that your top priority!

Once you manage to create make up that looks like perfection – you are in the Jet set Babe game. Welcome.

Never apply too much make upbottomline

Too much make up is the enemy if you want to achieve classy.

It is also a typical “beginners mistake” when you think that you will look better the more make up you apply – WRONG!!

People pay attention to girls who come plastered in layers of foundations, powders, colours, eyeshadows, liners etc – it just does not look good.

People can see through why girls are trying too hard to cover up themselves. Either they are hiding some major flaws or too insecure to show their real selves.

No matter what, it is not attractive. Show who you are instead. Natural beauty does not need coverage – it needs to be enhanced.

We all have something beautiful in us, we just need the confidence to show it. And the right methods of how to make it even prettier – not how to cover it up!

Wear discreet make upbottomline

The true Jet set Babes are the ones showing off their beauty without adding all amounts of layers to it. If you go to an event of just socialites you will see how the ladies are careful with their make up.

If for some reason they want to wear heavier make up, they make sure the end result looks natural and modest.

Day time:

You do not need all those foundations, powders, bronzers, blushers, contouring tools combined together!

Use half of them so that you can appear in any light without looking like you have been dipping your face in paint.

I understand you might need some foundation, concealer or powder due to skin imperfections, but make sure to find one that gives you a natural result. Dior has a great foundation which I personally love – Diorskin Nude giving you that natural “bare skin looking” result.

Another option is to use a tinted day creme instead of a foundation which gives you a little bit of colour and evens out your skin tone. I personally use Aloree CC cream second life because it is organic and gives me that colour when I look pale – but I know there are better tinted day creams out there.

I think adding a little bit of blusher and bronzer can be beneficial if you make it look discreet and use the perfect amount. Blend properly! I have made so many blush & bronze mistakes looking like I have been covered in dirt or been beaten up – so be careful! 🙂

I would not add more layering to your complexion during night unless you have to.

Remember that depending on surrounding and its lighting – a thick layer of foundation & powder may not look as good as when you left your house.

I would also avoid heavy contouring like in the example below due to the fact it gives an unnatural result although it may change your entire appearance to the better.

Again, we want to look naturally beautiful instead of faking our beauty to the max (leaving it looking obvious)

In this picture I personally think face number 3 looks better than number 4.

Day time:

We have previously covered the benefits of eyelash extensions and for this reason you will never need to worry about wearing mascara to define your eyes.

One problem solved! 🙂

In fact, thanks to this you will not need to wear any form of eye make up at all during the day.

Leave the eye shadows, eye liners for the evening do unless you choose very natural colours that do not stand out.

For night time go with natural colours depending on your skin tone, but you can play around depending how much you wish to define your eyes. I like grey or brown colours mixed with lighter shades. I believe the key is to use the amount of eye shadow required to define your eye, give it depth but without adding so much your eyes are completely masked.

Eyeliner can be a great addition to form your eyes when you are using eye shadow, but I would apply it with absolute care. Do investigate your eye shape and what your end result should be like. If you want more “cat eyes” then analyse first how it is best to apply the liner to achieve that according to your eye shape.

If you want to look clean cut and naturally beautiful, then you do not really need any eye make up for night time.

Keep those eye dos for occasions when you want add something to the outfit your wearing instead. For instance smoky eyes can look extremely sophisticated if worn with a sleek outfit – while smokey eyes can look trashy if worn with another outfit.

It all depends, feel your way forward! Just make sure the end result of the eye make up looks professional, practice practice at home if you are a beginner!

Brows should always be perfectly groomed and tinted. If necessary you can fill them with an eye brow pencil or shadow – but please – no sharp drawings! (referring to this image)

Under no circumstances should it be visible that you have “filled in” your eye brows, that’s how natural your result should be.

Day time:

Thankfully long gone are those days with thick layers of lipgloss and instead we have a more sophisticated trend going on with tinted lip balms and lip sticks.

For day time I believe you should wear your natural lip colour or slight enhancement of it.

Lip balm or a lip stick that matches the tone of your lips, but slightly darker/lighter depending on your skin tone.

Evening time you could be more bold with wearing red lip stick or other stronger tones.

Even pale lips are nice in the evening if you are wearing stronger eye make up. Do not wear bold lipstick together with heavy eye make up, for me it is a golden rule to never combine those two together.

Less is more, do not be afraid of showing your true self. Make use of what you have and enhance it. Everything else will follow!

I try not to inspire with the big brands fashion campaigns due to them being heavily retouched. But in this case I want to make an exception and simply show what type of make up/look I am trying to explain with my text. Ralph Lauren has always great beauty looks which look clean & sophisticated.

Natural beauty even if you are wearing make up. The end

I totally agree with you! I only use a cc cream(I don’t remember what but contains natural products),blush and lip gloss from Urban Decay.
I’ve a problem 🙁 I don’t like my eyebrows,I want a full and femenine brows like JS girls. Do you recommend eyebrows tinting?

    • Urban Decay has amazing eye colours!!! also Too Faced, I would say even better than Chanel (Chanel is good but quite dry in comparison)!!! Also Pupa with its range of baked eye shadows.

JB maybe you can make article about beauty products =] maybe you are not an expert in this but some work for you best maybe you overheard or read something interesting worth sharing =]

      have a great day!

      • sry forgot i use simple brown pencil on my eyebrows but i get to know Anastasia has good products

for nails i dont know many ppl like OPI I would say is average for its price, simple Rimel is far better but you might find all colours you like, and the best i found sally hansen (drugstore products) and from more expensive ones YSL holds quite good does not chip, I hate ones with lycra It takes ages for them to dry, for fashion experiments KIKO is good and cheap =]

    • Why not try Latisse – it will grow very thick and lush eyebrows and eyelashes.. not need for extensions or eyebrow tinting. The results are incredible –

  2. I agree and disagree with you because looking at their pics they are wearing more makeup than you say, just the colors are very neutral so it doesn’t look tacky. You need to wear quite a bit of makeup for it to show up in pics. But I do agree that the JS look is to look fresh and natural and simple, a better version of yourself.

  3. Hi Jetset babe =]

first of all thanks for moving that i like panel, second great article, i guess i know what you would like to say but i have some points
    * i would go French way first, that means to take care of your skin because it is your canvas and canvas needs to be flawless first, so you do not have to cover it so drastically (i just recently and i am 30 started to use eye cream (genetics), my problem is that my skin is overly sensitive so i can use only bioderma products for sensitive skin, other brands like la roche posay or avene will burn me and my skin will be red and they are meant for sensitive skin too!!!, so first i recommend to find creams what what work for you, it took me almost 2 years to find mine, and i am not still convinced so i will keep trying, what is great is bioderma micellar water, but i guess you all heard that time ago, before i didnt really want to use creams because of this) and those creams are not always cheap but worth it, i dont know about acne so no opinion on that one but i would try bioderma for that type of skin
    * if you want natural look you can still do make up, but preferably some good quality BB cram (i am trying vichy but it is too oily for summer maybe for winter it will be good the darker tone is better less visible than lighter one) and for those with need of concealer – CC cream ( I just recently heard Tamara Eclestone said she uses clinique, it is wort to try since its products are usually good, but the best are japanese and chinese BB/CC I would ask them for advice, for sure I wouldnt buy garnier and such brands even vichy is on the verge, the thing is i never had major problems with my skin maybe dark spots but i never need to use concealer because i do not have dark circles, so i have no opinion about CC or concealers, i once owned one from neutrogena and it was amazing i bought it in germany, so again find the one which works for you, but in general it will not be cheap, for example i use powder sometimes and I tried chanel and i have to say that one really works for me (but they have like 4 kinds so get one which doesnt make your skin look old, wrinkly like, because some do) about mascara, the best mascara i found so far is simple loreal volume million lashes (i put two coats normally) but i tried dior and lancome neither work for me, i have quite long naturally curly lashes and i do not want them to look stick together so lancome doesnt work for me at all, dior is too watery… but look for one which gives you that great curl, opens up your eye ) anyway natural look works fine if you are with close contact with pple who can scan your face from close proximity, but looking at those girls i can tell you:
*they use heavy duty make up like that girl on the 4th picture, cause they can get away with it since they take photos and you cannot see it you see only flawless face, even heavier make up is used in TV, and even heavier if you are a performer on the stage (you can imagine) but lets back up to the photo make up, so yes the girls use primers, concealers powders blushes bronzers … name it, and from distance nobody can see, it only gets bad when you are close, so either your boyfriend or boss needs to be ok with it, or find the way how to achieve the same looking face with less product, so try to cut on something like foundation and use BB instead or tinted cream (it is even better for sculpting with concealer) and than just powder with very good powder
*blending is the key, if you were wondering why you might look like you put too much make up on it might be the answer, you need to blend it more, so it looks like it is inprinted onto your face not just sitting on it

hope it helped and yes try at home first, many girls like us from eastern block and russians unlike americans we grow up with make up, we seen our mums do it and they let us try it in early age so for eample my eyebrows are plugged perfectly cause i do it from young age by myself and yes part of you needs to be artist (i draw and paint pictures so for me it’s the same just on face, i see the symmetry, if you dont learn that first so you are even on both sides and your hand is steady)

    • That is so true, eastern euro girls have a much better hand at makeup. The way they apply it really flatters their coloring and corrects the flaws they might have and enhances their good features. In America, I feel like girls just apply makeup the way they see it on other girls they like or based on what colors they like. And they don’t really watch the symmetry of it all. One side
Of the face will have more makeup that the other, or it doesn’t fix an unsymmetrical areas they might have on the face.

      • i should add that
        * for a skin go French way
        * for natural look go American (also for the hair =])
        * for the make up go Russian ;]

always enhance your natural beauty and correct the flaws
there are basically 2 goals to achieve
1 st the look which is considered to be ultimate beauty (perfect symetry, enhancing eyes or lips), 2nd to make it look as natural as possible, as if you wake up like that (the same goes for colours of your eyes, there were time where it was popular to put one big colour cloud over your eyelids and this part will always be depending on either fasion or your style, for JB style it seems that style is sophisticated settle jet sexi and romantic in the same time)

my mother always taught me to hide my flaws and it is funny since we are born with quite good genetics since the blood is well mixed (i am originally from Slovakia, but the same apply for many central states with many invasions and Russian)

        • and one more hint about flattering colour, we were also taught “colour me beautiful” 4 seasons colour system, there are many other system like this, but the basic is to understand what flatters your face, the same red doesnt look good on your friend but it might look good on you,
i ve seen many girls to do the same mistake, they buy some colour product just because it is new trend but it looks awful on them,
i basically do not follow the trends (i follow what looks good on me that way i can set the trends =]) and if i do i make sure i pick the one which will flatter me, and how you know it flatters you, put it on (go out of the shop on normal light with mirror, and take friend you trust ask her for her opinion, but this might be bias ;] so be your own judge but objective one!=]) and so you see that your face has brighten up, that you are almost happy looking, radiant? if so buy it and maybe two so you do not run out,
if it doesnt do anything to your face or make it look sad, sloppy, funky search further =]

          • the same way i buy even nail polish i put it on i go out of the shop and look at it there, for example i love pastel colour but i do not wear them otherwise i would look like washed out…

  4. I love your posts from plain jane to jetset babe! May the in the series be about skin care and treatments in detail?

  5. Great post Anna! I myself don’t wear much makeup (mainly because I have sensitive skin and bad eyesight so it’s not so fun to apply haha). Lately I have not been wearing any foundation at all, even when going out to dinner. I’m lucky to have quite good skin though; it has improved even more since I invested in better skin care (PCA, Aspect Dr). If I had a big event to go to I would wear foundation though, but it is so nice to have a break! My pores also look smaller since I have stopped wearing makeup all the time.

  6. I totally agree with what you’re saying. If anyone needed a better example on what NOT TO DO, take a look at the Youtube channel Sophdoesnails. Soph is a very beautiful and likable girl, but she consistently looks better BEFORE she puts on the makeup. It’s sad to see her cake her face with layers of unnecessary grease.
